Yes, that car….. Since the inception of the R8, there has always been mixed feelings. Some love it, some hate it, but regardless of opinions on the car itself, we always have been here to repair it. For one unlucky customer, who bought this silver Audi R8 V10 Spyder with only 6,000 miles on it, got more than he bargained for when he brought it in for diagnosis.
Upon picking up the car the customer had problems with clutch engagement, braking issues, caliper lockup, and check engine lights, etc. After weeks, which turned into months of battling with Audi USA the owner of this vehicle decided to thow in the towel with the dealer and seek out a specialist which brought him to our 11,000 sq. ft. Facility on Route 22 in Green Brook, NJ.
Upon our initial diagnosis of the braking system, our Team had to first resolve the fact that the clutch was wiped out and was preventing the vehicle from even being driven. Given the robustness of the factory unit it is unusual for a stock car to need a replacement clutch after so little use, but for the fact that the driver was fighting to get the vehicle to move due to random caliper lock up the clutch took the brunt of the work load.
Upon tear down and removal of the old V10 Clutch it was clear we made the right call! Here is the flywheel that came out of the car:
How’s that for some heat!! The blue discoloring comes from extremely high heat, a sign of abuse and or excessive wear on an application like this.
Repair Insight: Our Team of Certified Technicians found the the Audi R8’s Brake Booster assembly was in the process of slowly failing. Due to this the booster was randomly applying the Audi R8’s Brakes while the vehicle was being driven. The brake system was under enough strain that all of the R8’s calipers, rotors, and pads required replacement along with the complete clutch assembly.
This right here is what an OEM replacement looks like in pieces in the assembly lab… twin plate sprung goodness!
Our Team of Certified Technicians did to choose to replace all the associated components in the system, which included:
- OEM Audi Factory Flywheel
- OEM Audi Twin Disc Clutch
- OEM Audi Hydraulic Thrust Bearing
- OEM Audi Hardware + Seals
