Tires do make a difference

My OEM Pirelli P Zero run-flat tires were badly worn at 20K miles,  I noticed that the handling was impacted appreciably by the condition of the tires.  I also realize that staggered-size tires (standard on the x-line package) wear quicker due to the inability to rotate.  After much research, I decided to move away from run-flats looking for a larger selection of performance tires.  My first step was to purchase a space saver spare and jack kit from Bavarian Autosports.  The spare and jack/tool fit perfectly under the floor in the the rear storage area.  After much deliberation, I decided to go with the highly acclaimed Nitto Motivo all-season performance tires in the following sizes 275/40ZR20/XL (front) and 315/35ZR20/XL (rear).  I went with the all-season option so that I would not be forced to switch to winter tires as was necessary with the Pirelli's.  My first observation is that the Nitto's provide a much improved ride with minimal road noise.  Secondly, the X5 now handles the twiisties like a performance sedan with minimal body roll, great tracking and more precise steering.  Although it is too early to comment on durability, the tires come with a 60K warranty which is likely the best in class.  Bottom line...don't feel locking into high priced run-flats when there are better options!
